Gelangin Pharmacodynamics
The antimicrobial action of the drug is associated with inhibition of oxidative reactions of bacterial metabolism (thiamine antagonist). The drug has a wide spectrum of antibacterial and antifungal activity, in particular against Gram-positive bacteria and fungi of the genus Candida, the drug may also be effective in treating infections caused by, for example, Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Proteus spp. At a concentration of 100 mg/ml the drug suppresses most bacterial strains. The development of resistance has not been observed. Hexatidine has a weak anesthetic effect on the mucous membranes. The drug has antiviral effect against influenza A viruses, respiratory syncytial virus (RS-virus), herpes simplex virus type 1, affecting the respiratory tract.
Indications
As a symptomatic agent.
– Symptomatic treatment for inflammatory infectious diseases of the mouth and throat:
– tonsillitis, sore throat (including Plauta-Vensana sore throat, sidelobacterial sore throat), pharyngitis, gingivitis, stomatitis, glossitis, periodontal disease;
– fungal diseases.
– Prevention of infectious complications before and after surgical interventions on the oral cavity and larynx and injuries, including the prevention of infection of the alveoli after tooth extraction.
– Oral hygiene, including for treating bad breath.
Contraindications
– Hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug;
– Erosive-desquamous lesions of the oral mucosa;
– Childhood under 3 years of age.
Application during pregnancy and lactation
There is no information about any undesired effects of Gelangin® nova during pregnancy and breast feeding period. Nevertheless, before prescription of Gelangin® nova to pregnant or breastfeeding women, physician must carefully weigh benefits and risks of treatment, taking into account lack of sufficient data on penetration of the preparation through the placenta and into the breast milk.
Dosage and administration
- Topical.
- Children from 3 to 6 years old:
- Use of the drug is possible after consultation with a medical professional. Children may use the drug from such an age when there is no danger of uncontrolled swallowing while applying the solution.
- Adults and children over 6 years of age:
Fill measuring cup to the 15 mL mark and rinse mouth and throat with 15 mL of undiluted solution for at least 30 seconds 2-3 times daily. - Hexatidine adheres to the mucous membranes and due to this gives a persistent effect. In this regard, the drug should be used after meals.
- Gelangin® nova, a solution for topical use, can be used only for mouth and throat rinses.
- The solution must not be swallowed.
- It is always necessary to use undiluted solution.
- In the treatment of oral diseases the drug can also be applied with a tampon for 2-3 minutes.
- Duration of treatment is determined by the doctor.
