Chondroitin sulfate (Chondrolon) Pharmacodynamics
Chondroitin sulfate – the main component of proteoglycans, which together with collagen fibers of the cartilage matrix. It has chondroprotective properties, inhibits the activity of enzymes that cause degradation of articular cartilage, stimulates the production of proteoglycans by chondrocytes, increases metabolic processes in cartilage and subchondral bone, and is involved in the construction of the basic substance of bone and cartilage.
It has anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, reduces the release into the synovial fluid of inflammatory mediators and pain factors through synoviocytes and synovial macrophages, inhibits the secretion of leukotriene B4 and prostaglandin E2.
The drug promotes restoration of cartilage surfaces of joints, prevents collapse of connective tissue; normalizes the production of joint fluid, which leads to improved joint mobility, reducing the intensity of pain.
Indications
Osteoarthritis of the peripheral joints and spine.
Contraindications .
– Hypersensitivity to Chondroitin sulfate (Chondrolon);
– Bleeding and a tendency to bleeding;
– thrombophlebitis;
– Pregnancy, breast-feeding (no safety data available).
– Childhood (clinical studies on children have not been conducted).

Use during pregnancy and breast-feeding:
Chondroitin sulfate (Chondrolon) is contraindicated for use during pregnancy and during breast-feeding (breast-feeding should be discontinued during treatment).
Dosage and administration.
- Administer intramuscularly 100 mg (1 ampoule) every other day. Before use, the contents of the ampoule is dissolved in 1 ml of water for injection. If tolerated well, the dose is increased to 200 mg (2 ampoules) starting with the fourth injection. The course of treatment is 25-35 injections. Repeated courses are given after 6 months.
- The duration of repeated courses of treatment is set by the doctor.
- To achieve a stable clinical effect at least 25 injections of the drug are required. The effect lasts for several months after the end of treatment course.
- Repeated courses of treatment are used to prevent exacerbations.
