Sodium sulfacyl Pharmacodynamics
Antimicrobial bacteriostatic agent, sulfonamide. Mechanism of action is related to competitive antagonism with PABA and inhibition of dihydropteroatsynthetase, which leads to disruption of dihydrofolic acid synthesis and, eventually, its active metabolite tetrahydrofolic acid, required for synthesis of purines and pyrimidines.
It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative cocci, Escherichia coli. Shigella spp., Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus antracis, Corynebacterium diph- teriae, Yersinia perstis, Chlamydia spp., Actinomyces israelii, Toxoplasha gondii.
Development of resistance to sulfacetamide is possible.
Indications
In the complex therapy of eyelid, conjunctiva, cornea, anterior segment of the choroid, and tear ducts diseases caused by microorganisms sensitive to sulfacetamide. For the prevention of infectious complications in the treatment of burns and injuries of the organs of vision.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, children (under 2 months).
Pregnancy and lactation:
There is no sufficient experience on the use during pregnancy, lactation. It is possible to use sulfacetamide for treatment of pregnant and lactating women by prescription of the attending physician if the expected therapeutic effect exceeds the risk of possible side effects. Sulfonamides penetrate through the placenta and into the breast milk.
Jaundice may occur in infants whose mothers have taken sulfonamide tablets during pregnancy, therefore the risk of jaundice cannot be excluded when taking sulfonamide in the dosage form of eye drops.
Dosage and administration
- One to two drops in the conjunctival sac 6 to 8 times a day (every 2-3 hours). The course of treatment is 7-10 days. The number of instillations can be reduced as the condition improves. During therapy of eye diseases caused by Chlamydia trachomatis the dosing regimen is 1 drop every 2 hours, local application of sulfonamide should be combined with systemic therapy.
- The drops are put into the conjunctival sac in 1-2 drops 5-6 times a day. For prevention of blennorrhea in newborns – 2 drops in each conjunctival sac immediately after birth and 2 drops after 2 hours.
