Description

Povidone-Yodine Pharmacodynamics
Antiseptic drug. It blocks amino groups of cellular proteins. It has a wide range of antimicrobial action. It is active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (including E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus), mycoplasma, chlamydia, fungi (such as Candida), viruses, protozoa.
The active ingredient of the drug – iodine – is in the form of a complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone (povidone), related to iodophores, which bind iodine. The concentration of active iodine is 0.1-1%. In complex with polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine significantly loses local irritating effect and therefore is well tolerated when applied to mucous membranes, skin and wound surfaces. In contact with skin and mucous membranes iodine is gradually and evenly released, having a bactericidal effect on microorganisms. A thin colored layer remains at the place of application, which persists until all the iodine is released.

Indications
Acute and chronic inflammatory and infectious vaginal diseases (trichomonas, fungal, viral, nonspecific, mixed infections), bacterial vaginitis.
Prevention of infectious and inflammatory complications before gynecological interventions (induced termination of pregnancy, installation and removal of the IUD, cervical diathermic coagulation, hysterosalpingography, etc.).

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to iodine and other components of the drug, thyrotoxicosis (hyperthyroidism), Duhring’s dermatitis herpetiformis, thyroid adenoma, concomitant use of radioiodine, children under 8 years of age.
Caution. Chronic renal failure, pregnancy, breast-feeding, advanced age.
Use during pregnancy and breast-feeding. Iodine penetrates through the placental barrier and is excreted with the breast milk. It is not recommended to use the drug in II trimester of pregnancy and during breast-feeding. Administration of the drug during the specified periods is possible only if the estimated benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus and child. If it is necessary to use the drug in these cases, treatment is possible under individual medical supervision. In newborns and infants whose mothers used POVIDON-JOD, it is necessary to monitor the thyroid function.

Dosage and administration method

  • Intravaginal. After releasing the suppository from the envelope, it is inserted into the vagina by lying on the back and deeply into the vagina.
  • In acute vaginitis – 1 suppository 2 times a day for 7 days, in subacute and chronic vaginitis – 1 suppository 1 time a day before going to bed for 14 days (regardless of the phase of the menstrual cycle). For preoperative prevention of complications of infectious genesis in gynecology the drug is administered intravaginally 2 times a day (morning and evening) for 1 to 7 days.
