Antimicrobial agent – nitrofuran

Nitrofurantoin 100 mg is used for bacterial infections of the urinary tract caused by nitrofurantoin-sensitive microorganisms: acute uncomplicated infections, severe complicated recurrent infections, prevention of urinary tract infections, including during uncomplicated chronic diseases and during urologic operations or examination (cystoscopy, urinary catheterization, etc.).

Description

Nitrofurantoin 100 mg Pharmacodynamics
An antimicrobial agent of the nitrofuran group, intended primarily for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Nitrofurantoin disrupts protein synthesis in bacteria and cell membrane permeability. In low doses it has a bacteriostatic effect, in high doses it is bactericidal.
Effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria (Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus spp., Shigella dysenteria, Shigella flexneri, Shigella hoydii, Shigella sonnei, Escherichia coli, Proteus spp.). Resistant to nitrofurantoin: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Pseudomonas cepacia, Providencia spp., Acinetobacter spp.
Nitrofurantoin is not used for urinary tract infections caused by gonococci, chlamydia, mycoplasmas.

 

Indications
Bacterial infections of the urinary tract caused by nitrofurantoin-sensitive microorganisms: acute uncomplicated infections, severe complicated recurrent infections, prevention of urinary tract infections, including during uncomplicated chronic diseases and during urologic operations or examination (cystoscopy, urinary catheterization, etc.).

 

Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to nitrofurantoin, nitrofuran derivatives or other drug components, chronic renal failure (CKD < 60 ml/min), oliguria, anuria, II – III degree chronic heart failure (CHF), cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, acute porphyria, anuria, pulmonary fibrosis, pregnancy, breast-feeding, neuritis or polyneuropathy, children under 6 years old.
Caution
Diabetes mellitus, anemia, electrolyte imbalance, vitamin B deficiency, insufficient liver function, lung diseases, tendency to develop peripheral neuropathies (itching of hands, feet, numbness).
Administration during pregnancy and lactation
Nitrofurantoin 100 mg is contraindicated during pregnancy. If it is necessary to apply the drug during lactation, breastfeeding must be discontinued.

 

Dosage and administration

Orally, with a meal, drinking plenty of fluids.

Adults and children over 12 years.

In acute, uncomplicated urinary tract infections – 100 mg (2 tablets 50 mg or 1 tablet 100 mg) 2 times a day for 7 days.

Symptoms of the disease may disappear before the infection is cured, and the disease may worsen again if the drug is discontinued.

In severe complicated recurrent infections – 100 mg (2 tablets of 50 mg or 1 tablet of 100 mg) 3-4 times a day for 7 days. If nausea occurs, the dose should be reduced or discontinued.

Prophylaxis of urinary tract infections, including uncomplicated chronic diseases and urological operations or examination (cystoscopy, catheterization of the urinary tract, etc.) – 100 mg (2 tablets of 50 mg or 1 tablet of 100 mg) at night.

Children 6-12 years of age (body weight over 25 kg)

In acute uncomplicated urinary tract infections – 3 mg/kg/day, divided into 3-4 doses. The course of treatment is 7 days.

Children with body weight less than 25 kg are not recommended to use Nitrofurantoin 100 mg because of the large dose of the active substance in one tablet.
