Description
Metformin (Formetin) 500 mg Pharmacodynamics
Oral hypoglycemic drug of the biguanide group. Inhibits gluconeogenesis in the liver, decreases glucose absorption from the intestine, enhances peripheral glucose utilization and increases tissue sensitivity to insulin. Does not affect insulin secretion by beta cells of the pancreas, does not cause hypoglycemic reactions.
Reduces triglyceride and LDL levels.
Stabilizes or reduces body weight.
Has a fibrinolytic effect due to inhibition of tissue-type plasminogen activator inhibitor.
Indications
– Diabetes mellitus type 2 in case of ineffective diet therapy (especially in obese patients).
Contraindications
– Diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic precoma, coma;
– Severe renal dysfunction;
– liver function abnormalities;
– acute alcohol poisoning;
– severe infectious diseases;
– conditions that may contribute to the development of lactacidosis, including cardiac and respiratory failure, acute phase of myocardial infarction, acute impairment of cerebral circulation, dehydration, chronic alcoholism;
– lactacidosis and indications of it in the anamnesis;
– serious surgical operations and injuries (in these cases, insulin therapy is indicated);
– use within 2 days before and 2 days after radioisotopic or radiological studies with the introduction of iodine-containing contrast agent;
– Adherence to a hypocaloric diet (less than 1000 calories/);
– pregnancy;
– Lactation (breast-feeding);
– Hypersensitivity to the components of Metformin (Formetin) 500 mg.
Dosage and administration
- It is adjusted individually, taking into account the level of glucose in the blood.
- The initial dose is 500 mg 1 to 2 or 850 mg 1 time. The dose is increased gradually (once a week) to 2-3 g. The maximum daily dose is 3 g.
- It is recommended that a daily dose greater than 850 mg be taken in two doses (morning and evening).
- In elderly patients the daily dose should not exceed 1 g.
- Due to an increased risk of lactacidosis, when prescribing metformin in patients with severe metabolic disorders, the drug dose should be reduced.
- Metformin (Formetin) 500 mg is intended for long-term use.
- Metformin (Formetin) 500 mg tablets should be taken during or after meals, without chewing and with plenty of fluids.
