Description
Bromhexin Pharmacodynamics
Mucolytic (secretolytic) remedy, has expectorant and mild anti-cough effect. Reduces sputum viscosity (depolymerizes mucoprotein and mucopolysaccharide fibers, increases the serous component of bronchial secretion); activates the atrial epithelium, increases volume and improves sputum discharge. Stimulates production of endogenous surfactant, which provides stability of alveolar cells during breathing. The effect is manifested in 2-5 days from the start of treatment.
Indications
– Acute and chronic bronchopulmonary diseases, accompanied by difficulty in deflating viscous sputum: tracheobronchitis, bronchitis of various etiologies (including complicated bronchiectasis), bronchial asthma, pulmonary tuberculosis, emphysema, pneumonia (acute and chronic), pneumoconiosis, mucoviscidosis.
– Bronchial tree sanation in the pre-operative period and during therapeutic and diagnostic intrabronchial manipulations, prevention of congestion in the bronchi of thick viscous sputum after surgery.
Contraindications
– Hypersensitivity to bromhexine and/or other components of the drug;
– gastric and/or 12 duodenal ulcer (including anamnesis);
– pregnancy (1st trimester);
– Breast-feeding period;
– children under 6 years of age – for 8 mg tablets;
– Children under 3 years of age – for 4 mg tablets;
– Lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency and/or glucose-galactose malabsorption.
With caution.
– Renal and/or hepatic insufficiency;
– Bronchial diseases accompanied by excessive secretion;
– History of episodes of hemoptysis;
– Gastric bleeding in the anamnesis;
– Pregnancy (II and III trimester).
Administration during pregnancy and breast-feeding
It is contraindicated to use the drug in the first trimester of pregnancy.
It is possible to use in II and III trimester of pregnancy only in cases when the supposed benefit for a mother overweights the potential risk for fetal development.
If it is necessary to apply the drug during breast-feeding, breast-feeding should be discontinued.
Directions for use and dosages
- Bromhexin is administered orally regardless of meals. Adults are prescribed 1 -2 tablets 3 – 4 times a day, children from 3 to 5 years (inclusive) – 2 mg, from 6 to 14 years – 4 mg 3 times a day. The course of treatment is from 4 to 28 days.
- During treatment, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, which supports the secretolytic action of bromhexine.
