Dexpantel Pharmacodynamics
Active substance of Dexpantel® is dexpanthenol/panthenol – precursor of pantothenic acid, which thus possesses all the same biological properties as D-pantothenic acid, which, having transformed in human organism into coenzyme A, is involved in many metabolic processes. Data obtained in animal experiments indicate an increase in fibroblast proliferation and a regenerating effect. When applied externally, dexpanthenol can fill the increased need of damaged skin or mucosa in pantothenic acid. Eye gel has a high viscosity, which allows achieving long-term contact of dexpanthenol with the surface of the mucous membrane of the eye.
Indications
– Treatment of non-inflammatory keratopathies, such as corneal dystrophy, recurrent erosions, corneal lesions due to contact lens wear.
– As an adjunctive therapy to stimulate the healing process of the cornea and conjunctiva in case of trauma and burns (chemical and thermal).
– as an aid in the treatment of infections of the cornea of bacterial, viral or fungal origin.
Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to any of the components of the drug.
Caution
Pregnancy and breast-feeding (no clinical data available).
Administration during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
No data is available on the effect of pantothenic acid when taken orally on pregnancy and fetal or neonatal development. However, it is known that when ingested, pantothenic acid, which is metabolized by dexpanthenol, passes freely through the placenta and is excreted through breast milk in proportion to the amount of the drug taken.
Because there is no data about concentrations of dexpanthenol (pantothenic acid) in plasma after topical administration in form of eye gel, the use of Dexpantel® during pregnancy and/or breast feeding is possible only after consultation with a physician, when the expected benefits to a mother exceed the potential risk to a fetus and/or child.
Directions for use and dosages
- Topically.
- Into the lower conjunctival sac of the affected eye 1 drop 4 times a day, and 1 drop before bedtime.
