Description
Xylometazoline Pharmacodynamics
Xylometazoline belongs to a group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic activity, causes narrowing of blood vessels of nasal mucosa, thus eliminating edema and hyperemia of nasal mucosa, restores nasal passageway, facilitates nasal breathing.
The action of the drug starts within a few minutes after application and lasts up to 10 hours.
Indications
Acute respiratory diseases with rhinitis (runny nose) phenomena; acute allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, pollinosis; middle otitis (as a component of combined therapy for reduction of nasopharyngeal mucous edema); preparation of the patient for diagnostic manipulations (rhinoscopy).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to xylometazoline, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, marked atherosclerosis, glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, thyrotoxicosis, brain surgery (in anamnesis), children under 2 years of age for 0.05% solution and under 6 years for 0.1% solution.
Do not use during therapy with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAO) and tricyclic antidepressants.
Caution: coronary heart disease (angina III-IV functional class), prostatic hyperplasia, diabetes, pregnancy, lactation.
Dosage and administration method
- Intranasally.
- Adults and children over 6 years of age should take 1 injection of 0.1% xylometazoline solution into each nasal passage 2 to 3 times a day.
- Children from 2 to 6 years of age take 0.05% xylometazolin solution 1 injection in each nasal passage 1 to 2 times a day.
- Do not use the drug more than 3 times a day. Do not use the drug without a break for more than 3-5 days.
