Description

Ropaxim Pharmacodynamics
Xylometazoline belongs to the group of local vasoconstrictors (decongestants) with alpha-adrenomimetic effect, causes narrowing of blood vessels of nasal mucosa, thereby eliminating edema and hyperemia of nasopharyngeal mucosa. It relieves congestion, facilitating nasal breathing in rhinitis.
Ipratropium bromide has an anticholinergic effect. When administered intranasally, it reduces nasal secretion by stopping nasal flow due to competitive inhibition of cholinergic receptors located in the epithelium of the nasal cavity. In therapeutic concentrations it does not irritate the mucous membrane and does not cause its hyperemia.
The drug starts to work in 5 – 10 minutes and has a persistent effect for 6 – 8 hours.

Indications
-symptomatic treatment of edema and hyperemia of the nasal cavity;
-Acute respiratory diseases with rhinitis (runny nose), accompanied by congestion, acute allergic rhinitis, pollinosis, sinusitis.

Contraindications .
Hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, significant atherosclerosis, hypersensitivity to atropine or similar compounds (hyoscyamine, scopolamine), glaucoma, atrophic rhinitis, thyrotoxicosis, states after transsphenoidal hypophysectomy, brain surgery (history), pregnancy and breast-feeding, age under 18 years.
Do not use the drug during therapy with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants, including within 14 days after their withdrawal.

Dosage and administration method

  • Intranasal.
  • For adults over 18 years of age: 1 injection into each nasal passage 3 times a day.
  • At least 6 hours should pass between two injections.
  • The drug is used for no more than 7 days without medical advice.
  • Before using the spray for the first time, press the pump dispenser several times until a full dose is delivered. No additional activation of the dosing device is required during further use. If there is uneven dosing of the spray or if there is a break in use of the drug for more than 9 days, you need to press the pump dosing device repeatedly to activate it until a full dose is delivered. It is recommended to discontinue treatment immediately after symptoms have resolved, even if this is earlier than 7 days (maximum duration of therapy), in order to minimize the risk of adverse events. Prolonged use of xylomethasoline may cause nasal mucosal edema and increased secretion due to the development of increased cellular sensitivity to the active substances of the drug, the so-called “ricochet” effect.
  • Use in old age: experience in using the drug in patients over 70 years old is limited.
  • One injection of Ropaxim contains about 70 micrograms of xylometazoline hydrochloride and 84 micrograms of ipratropium bromide.
