Description
Lavacol Pharmacodynamics
Osmotic laxative. High molecular weight substance, which are long linear polymers that are able to retain water molecules with the help of hydrogen bonds. Increases the osmotic pressure and volume of fluid in the intestine, increasing peristalsis. Increases the volume of chyme, prevents loss of electrolytes with feces. Restores the evacuation reflex, does not change the pH of the chyme.
The action of the drug is based on a combination of a high-molecular-weight polymer and an isotonic solution of electrolytes. Macrogol prevents absorption of water from the stomach and intestines and promotes faster evacuation of intestinal contents by frequent defecation. Electrolytes contained in the drug prevent disruption of water-electrolyte balance of the body.
Indications
Preparation for endoscopic or radiological examination of the large intestine, as well as for surgical interventions requiring the absence of intestinal contents.
Symptomatic treatment of constipation in adults.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to macrogoal or any of the excipients forming the drug, dehydration, chronic heart failure, peptic ulcer, bowel obstruction, perforation or risk of perforation of the intestinal wall, severe inflammatory bowel disease, gastric emptying disorders (including gastroparesis), childhood under 18 years (effectiveness and safety not established).
Caution
Ulcerative colitis, patients with impaired swallowing reflex, reflux esophagitis, depression of consciousness, renal dysfunction, susceptibility to water-electrolyte imbalance, neurological disorders, movement disorders, susceptibility to aspiration, pregnancy, advanced age.
Administration during pregnancy and breast feeding period
It is possible to use the drug during pregnancy if the expected benefits to the mother exceed the potential risk to the fetus (because of the lack of data for the estimation of the effect of macrogoal on the fetus).
As macrogoal is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, it is possible to use the drug during breast feeding in consultation with the attending physician.
Dosage and administration
- Preparing for endoscopic or radiological examination of the colon, as well as surgical interventions
- Inside. The drug should be used only in adults.
- The drug is taken orally on an empty stomach. The contents of the package (14 g) should be dissolved in 200-250 ml of water immediately before use.
- If a procedure (investigation or surgery) is scheduled for the first half of the day (before 12.00), the solution should be taken the night before at the rate of 15 sachets of about 200-250 ml with an interval of 20 minutes. The recommended hours of taking the drug are 17.00-22.00.
- If the treatment is scheduled in the afternoon (after 12 noon) the administration of the solution should be divided into two parts (the night before the patient takes 10 sachets and 5 sachets in the morning). Recommended hours of intake: the day before the procedure 19.00-22.00 (10 sachets), in the morning before the procedure from 6.00-9.00 (5 sachets).
- Reception of the drug should be completed 3-4 hours before the procedure.
- During the reception and after it only liquid foods are consumed. After 22.00 hours of eating is not indicated.
- Symptomatic treatment of constipation
- Inside. 1 sachet in the morning or 1 sachet in the morning and evening if taking 2 sachets a day. The daily dose should be adapted according to the clinical effect and may vary from 1 sachet each day to 2 sachets per day. The contents of each sachet should be dissolved in a glass of water immediately before intake. The effect of taking the drug is expressed within 24-28 hours after ingestion. The recommended course of treatment is 1 month. To maintain the effect after restoring normal bowel function should be carried out with an active lifestyle and a diet rich in vegetable fiber. If symptoms of constipation persist for more than 1 month, it is necessary to repeat extended diagnostic examination.
