Nootropic, has a metabolic and trophic effect. It has membrane stabilizing properties, inhibits lipid peroxidation, protects membranes of neurons and mitochondria from damage. It is an antioxidant. In the experiment it was found that under the influence of idebenone there is inhibition of apoptosis. This effect is based on both antioxidant properties of the drug and its ability to stimulate the production of neurotrophic factors. Under experimental conditions in nerve tissue culture, idebenone prevented the formation of free radicals, while the concentration of oxidative protein damage products decreased. Idebenone activates ATP formation as well as glucose utilization in the nervous tissue; in parallel, the probability of lactate acidosis decreases. In addition to the acetylcholinergic system, it acts on the serotonergic system. From the first days of use it shows antiesthenic, psychostimulant and antidepressant effects, the nootropic effect is realized a little later, after 3-4 weeks of use.
Indications
In treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders due to brain pathology of vascular and degenerative origin.
In the treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders against the background of cerebrovascular insufficiency and age-related involutional changes in the brain.
Contraindications .
Hypersensitivity to idebenone or other components of the drug, chronic renal insufficiency, lactase deficiency, lactose intolerance, glucose-galactose malabsorption, age under 18 years.
Caution
Because idebenone is capable of in vitro inhibition of platelet aggregation, it is considered to be used with caution if there is a history of hemorrhagic stroke or in patients who are receiving anticoagulants.
Use in pregnancy and during breastfeeding
The safety of using the drug in pregnant women has not been established. It is possible to use the drug during pregnancy if the expected benefits for a mother exceed the possible risk for a fetus.
It is contraindicated to use the drug during breast-feeding period. Preclinical studies have shown that Idebenone penetrates into the breast milk. If it is necessary to apply the drug during breast-feeding, breast-feeding should be discontinued.
Dosage and administration
- Orally, after a meal (last dose not later than 17 hours).
- At 30 mg (1 capsule) 2-3 times a day. The course of treatment is determined by the doctor.
