Bronchorus Pharmacodynamics
Mucolytic and expectorant.
It has secretomotor, secretolytic and expectorant action.
Ambroxol stimulates motor activity of the cilia of the ciliated epithelium of the bronchial mucosa (mucokinetic or secretomotor action). Peristaltic contraction along the spiral of ciliated (ciliary) cells of bronchial epithelium removes mucus from the bronchial tree (mucociliary transport or mucociliary clearance). Ambroxol significantly improves mucociliary transport.
Ambroxol stimulates serous cells of glands of bronchial mucosa, increases the content of the mucous component of sputum and normalizes the disturbed ratio of serous and mucous components of sputum. By activating hydrolyzing enzymes and increasing release of lysosomes from Clara cells, it reduces viscosity of sputum and its adhesive properties (mucolytic or secretolytic action).
Ambroxol increases synthesis and secretion of surface-active substance (surfactant) in alveoli and bronchi.
As a result of these mechanisms, viscosity of sputum decreases significantly and its expectoration improves.
After oral administration the action comes in 30 minutes and lasts for 6-12 hours.
Indications
Acute and chronic respiratory diseases accompanied by viscous sputum:
– Acute and chronic bronchitis;
– pneumonia;
– Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
– Bronchial asthma with difficult expectoration of sputum;
– bronchiectatic disease.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, pregnancy (first trimester), age under 12 years (children under 12 years are prescribed Bronchorus in the form of syrup).
In case of lactose intolerance (in glucose/galactose malabsorption syndrome or sucrose/isomaltose deficiency), note that the drug contains lactose.
Dosage and administration
- Orally, after meals, with plenty of fluids.
- Adults and children over 12 years of age – 1 tablet (30 mg) 3 times daily.
- If necessary, to increase the therapeutic effect, 2 tablets (60 mg) 2 times a day may be prescribed.
- In severe cases, the dose is not reduced during the entire course of treatment.
- Children under 12 years of age are prescribed Bronchorus in syrup form.
- It is not recommended to take the drug for more than 5 days without medical advice.
