Description

Helmindazole Pharmacodynamics
Anthelminthic drug of broad spectrum action; most effective against Enterobius vermicularis, Trichuris trichura, Ascaris lumbricoides, Ancylostoma duodenale, Necator americanus, Strongyloides stercoralis, Taenia solium, Echinococcus granulosus, Echinococcus multilocularis, Trichinella spiralis, Trichinella nativa, Trichinella nelsoni. Causes irreversible disruption of glucose utilization, depletes glycogen reserves in helminth tissues, inhibits cellular tubulin synthesis, and inhibits adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis.

Indications
Enterobiasis, ascariasis, ankylostomidiasis, strongyloidiasis, trichocephaliasis, trichinellosis, teniasis, both in monoinvasion and mixed helminthiasis; echinococcosis (if surgical treatment is impossible).

Contraindications
– Hypersensitivity to mebendazole, other components of the drug,
– ulcerative colitis,
– Crohn’s disease,
– hepatic insufficiency,
– Childhood (under 3 years),
– pregnancy,
– lactation period,
– lactose intolerance,
– lactase deficiency,
– glucose-galactose malabsorption,
– concomitant use with metronidazole, phenytoin, carbamazepine, ritonavir.
Administration during pregnancy and lactation
Pregnancy.
It is contraindicated to use the drug during pregnancy.
Breast-feeding period.
There is no data on whether mebendazole penetrates into the mother’s milk. If it is necessary to apply the drug in lactation, it is recommended to stop breast-feeding.

Dosage and administration method

  • Orally with a small amount of water.
    Adults and children over 3 years.
  • In enterobiasis – once in 100 mg / day (1 tablet), the treatment course of 1 day. Since reinfection in enterobiasis is quite common, the treatment should be repeated after 2 and 4 weeks.
  • It is recommended that all family members be treated simultaneously.
    With ascariasis, trichocephaliasis, ankylostomiasis and mixed helminthiasis: 200 mg/day (1 tablet in the morning, 1 tablet in the evening); treatment course is 3 days.
  • In teniasis, strongyloidiasis. Adults: 400 mg per day (2 tablets in the morning and 2 tablets in the evening); treatment course is 3 days. Children over 3 years of age: 200 mg/day (1 tablet in the morning, 1 tablet in the evening); treatment course is 3 days.
    In echinococcosis. Adults and children over 14 – during the first 3 days 500 mg 2 times a day, the dose is increased to 500 mg 3 times a day during the next 3 days, further the dose is increased to 1000-1500 mg 3 times a day. The average duration of treatment of echinococcosis caused by Echinococcus granulosis is 4-6 weeks, that of Echinococcus multilocularis – up to two years.
  • In trichinellosis on the 1st day 3 times a day by 200-300 mg, on the 2nd day 4 times a day by 200-300 mg, and from 3 to 14 days – 3 times a day by 500 mg.
