Taurine Pharmacodynamics
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid formed in the body during the conversion of cysteine.
It is an anticataractic agent and has a metabolic effect. It stimulates the processes of reparation and regeneration in diseases of dystrophic nature and diseases accompanied by acute metabolic disorders of ocular tissues. It promotes normalization of the function of cell membranes, activation of the energy and metabolic processes, preservation of the electrolyte composition of the cytoplasm by accumulating the K+ and Ca2+ , improvement of the conditions for conducting the nerve impulse.

Indications
The drug is used in combination therapy.
– Corneal dystrophy.
– Cataract (senile – diabetic, traumatic, radiation),
– Corneal trauma (as a stimulant of reparative processes).
– Primary open-angle glaucoma (in combination with β-adrenoblockers (to improve the outflow of intraocular fluid)).

Contraindications
Individual hypersensitivity to taurine.

Administration during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
Administration of the drug during pregnancy and breast feeding is possible only if the expected benefits to the mother exceed the potential risk to the fetus or child.

Directions for use and dosages.

  • Topically. The drug is used as instillation.
  • For cataract – 1-2 drops 2-4 times a day for 3 months. The course is repeated at one-month intervals.
  • In traumas and dystrophic corneal diseases the drug is used in the same dosage for 1 month.
  • In open-angle glaucoma (in combination with butylaminohydroxypropoxypoxypoxymethyl methyloxadiazole or thymolol maleate) – 1-2 drops 2 times daily 15-20 minutes before prescription of one of the local hypotensive drugs for 6 weeks followed by withdrawal for 2 weeks.
