Description
Mezim Pro Pharmacodynamics
An enzyme drug that improves digestion. Pancreatin is a powder from porcine pancreas which contains other enzymes along with external pancreatic enzymes – lipase, amylase, protease, trypsin and chymotrypsin.
The pancreatic enzymes contained in the drug facilitate the breakdown of proteins, fats and carbohydrates, which leads to their more complete absorption in the small intestine. Trypsin suppresses stimulated pancreatic secretion with analgesic effect. Maximum enzymatic activity of the drug is observed 30-45 min after oral administration.
Indications
– Substitution therapy in external pancreatic function insufficiency (including chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis);
– Chronic inflammatory-dystrophic diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, gall bladder;
– conditions after resection or irradiation of gastrointestinal organs, accompanied by impaired digestion, flatulence, diarrhea (as part of combination therapy);
– Gastrointestinal disorder of a functional nature (with intestinal infectious diseases, irritable bowel syndrome, etc.);
– to improve digestion in patients with normal gastrointestinal function in case of dietary abnormalities;
– Preparation for X-ray and ultrasound studies of the abdominal cavity.
Contraindications
– Acute pancreatitis;
– Exacerbation of chronic pancreatitis;
– Hypersensitivity to pancreatin or other drug components;
– hereditary intolerance to galactose, lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome;
– children under 3 years of age (indivisible dosage form).
Administration during pregnancy and lactation
In view of lack of sufficient data concerning use of pancreatic enzymes in humans during pregnancy and lactation, application of the preparation Mezim® Pro is possible only in case when the expected benefits for mother exceed the possible risk for fetus or child.
Dosage and administration regimen
- Dosage of Mesim® Pro is established individually depending on severity of the disease and food composition.
- If there are no other indications, an average single dose for adults is 2-4 tablets of Mezim® Pro per meal. It is recommended to take half or third of the single dose at the beginning of a meal and the rest during the meal. The drug is taken orally, without chewing and with plenty of liquid.
- It is possible to increase the dose, which should be carried out only under the supervision of a doctor, focusing on the relief of symptoms (e.g. steatorrhea, abdominal pain).
- Maximum daily dose is 15000-20000 units of Ph. Eur. lipase/kg body weight.
- For children the dosing regime is determined by the physician according to the degree of disease expression and food composition at the rate of 500-1000 IU of Ph. Eur. lipase/kg of child body weight for each meal.
- The duration of treatment may vary from a few days (for digestive disorders, dietary errors) to several months or even years (if permanent replacement therapy is necessary).
